 | Area News: 5 Big-Time Indiana Bluegill Waters |
5 Big-Time Indiana Bluegill Waters Indiana Game & Fish By Ed Harp
Now’s the time to start searching for bull bluegills in our state’s premium lakes and reservoirs. Here are five to consider. |
| It’s bluegill time and there’s no better place to catch them than right now on the lakes and reservoirs of our state. No matter where you live, there’s a water near you that contains bluegills. Generally, bluegill spawns are successful year after year; therefore, stocking programs are usually unnecessary, excepting in newly formed impoundments. The drought of 2007 probably didn’t have much effect on bluegills. Fortunately, most were hatched before water levels dropped precariously low. | Photo: wikipedia
|
In fact, the drought may have helped in some areas. Weed and brush growth on exposed land was heavy in most parts of Indiana. As a consequence, there’s likely to be plenty of springtime cover in 2008. That’ll give these panfish countless places to build their nests. It’ll also give anglers plenty of places to fish.
This article will examine five top bluegill lakes in our state. They’re all public and for the most part big. However, as good as these places are, don’t think these are the only suitable spots to bluegill fish. They aren’t. | Bluegills live almost everywhere. Small municipal water supplies, farm ponds, borrow pits and golf course ponds are often overflowing with them. And they’re frequently the places for big-time panfishing. (Keep in mind that the state record, a 3- pound, 4-ounce giant was caught by Harold Catey some 35 years ago in a Greene County farm pond.)
With all that in mind, let’s take a closer look at five -- in no particular order -- of the best bluegill venues that the Hoosier State has to offer. | Photo: wikipedia
|
PATOKA RESERVOIR This sprawling 8,800-acre impoundment is in south-central Indiana in Dubois, Orange and Crawford counties. Patoka Reservoir is within easy driving distance of nearly every major city or municipality in the central and southern part of the state.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Patoka is a great place to fish for bluegills. There are a fair amount of shore-fishing opportunities and at least 11 boat ramps that’ll handle any reasonable sized fishing boat, including a fully equipped, modern bass boat.
Patoka bluegills spawn in stages from the middle of April through the last part of May, or in some years, the early part of June. That’s usually the best time to catch them, the biggest ones anyway. Most successful local anglers fish two general areas of the lake at this time of year -- main-lake shallow humps and backwater areas in the creeks.
The humps are easy enough to find by using your depthfinder. Follow the main-lake channel and look for sharp rises anywhere that push up to form flats.
The backwater areas of creeks are another matter. To find them, you’ll need nothing other than an eye on the shoreline. When you see a place with a cut into the hillside, or perhaps a place where a small inflow enters the water, you’re in the right spot.
Keep in mind that it doesn’t take much water to harbor bluegills. If you’re careful, and don’t bang around in the boat or shout too loudly along the shoreline, you can frequently fish all day in even the smallest of bluegill holding areas.
On the north end of the lake, try Painter Creek. A little farther to the east, you’ll find Walls Lake and Kings Bridge, both of which account for more than their fair share of trophy-sized bull bluegills. If the southern part of the lake is more convenient, you should take a close look at Sycamore, Allen or Ritter creeks. Each of these creeks has countless small branches that flow to, and from, them. They can offer good fishing, too. Don’t be afraid to move around a bit if the bite is slow.
No matter if you fish the main-lake humps or the backwater cuts of the creeks, water between 2 and 5 feet deep, with plenty of grass and wood, is your best bet at this time of year. Most of the bigger bluegills will be moving to or from their beds and this seems to be the depth they most prefer, at least when they’re actively feeding.
SUMMIT LAKE The 800-acre Summit Lake is located about four miles north of New Castle. Summit is renowned across the state for its largemouth bass population. One reason for this is that their forage base is primarily bluegills. That’s not only good news for the largemouths, it’s good news for ...

"We at French Lick Resort Casino are excited to join in this venture, because of this area’s storied circus history," said Mark Bommarito, vice president of marketing for the resort.
Ed Ballard, during the time he owned West Baden Springs Hotel, also owned traveling circuses based in the little town of Peru, Indiana. Among these was the the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, which was begun in the 1880s and was billed as the "high-class circus." According to the International Circus Hall of Fame, Ballard and two other men purchased this circus in 1913.
The Hagenbeck-Wallace circus performed at venues throughout the United States, from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Havirland, Texas, and often performed in West Baden Springs, both in the hotel and in the building on Beechwood Street in French Lick, IN which is still known to long-time locals as "the circus barn." During the winter, the circus animals were also sometimes kept in the French Lick/West Baden area. | Photo: Wikipedia

In 1907 Wallace purchased the Carl Hagenbeck Circus and renamed it Hagenbeck-Wallace. It was advertised as the "world's highest class circus," and was one of the top two or three circuses in the world. The only other shows equal in magnitude were Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey.

"I remember going to the circus at West Baden," wrote Kathleen Horner, age 92, of Salem, Ind., in a letter to resort management. "It was really something in the atrium. Even the elephants looked small in such a large area."
According to the September/October 1966 edition of Bandwagon, in 1924, this circus featured several animal acts, including 10 tigers, 20 monkeys, two hippopotamuses, eight bears, 12 elephants, boxing kangaroos and ...

 | Area News: Floating cabins a surprising success at Patoka Lake Marina |
SpringsValley.com News Lexington, KY USA By SpringsValley.com News Staff
Patoka Lake Marina is first place in the state to sell floating cabins |
| | Photo: Patoka Lake Marina website
The cabins are full-size homes, include a screen porch, circular staircase leading to the roof, deck and full-size kitchens. |
BIRDSEYE, IND. – Patoka Lake Marina saw a niche in the tourism market when it launched its first floating cabin on Patoka Lake in 2006. Vacationers who wanted to be on the water, but didn’t want the responsibility of a houseboat, opted instead to rent a floating cabin.
Now, Patoka Lake Marina not only is renting floating cabins, but it’s selling them to individuals who want to own their own home on the water. It is the first time a floating cabin has been offered for sale in the state, and it’s also the first time vacationers have a chance to live on Patoka Lake.
Built in the 1970s by the Army Corps of Engineers, about 75 percent of the 8,800-acre lake is surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest. The only buildings on the lake: Patoka Lake Marina and Hoosier Hills Marina.
The scenic environment, lush forests and water sport and recreation draws thousands of tourists to tiny Birdseye every May through September. It’s become so popular, vacationers reserve houseboats and floating cabins as much as a year in advance. That demand has led Patoka Lake Marina to offer floating cabins for sale.
“A floating cabin is the next best thing to being able to build a home on the water, and it’s a great alternative to a houseboat,” said Harvey Edwards, who is a part-owner of Patoka Lake Marina. “You get all the advantages of being right on the water, but you don’t have the responsibility of driving a houseboat.”
While this is the first time floating cabins have been sold in Indiana, they have been popular in Florida and the East Coast for many years. The cabins are full-size homes, include a screen porch, circular staircase leading to ...

Southern Indiana contains over 2,600 known caves including some of the longest in the United States.
Most of these caves are contained in a small area of the state near the towns of Leavenworth, IN. and Marengo, IN.
Two of these caves, and the nearby Blue River in Milltown, IN., have become popular tourist attractions in the past few years.
Both Wyandotte and Marengo caves are designated as United States National Landmarks.
The Blue River was Indiana's first designated scenic river and flows 58 miles through the Southern Indiana Hill Country and all three adventures may be easily enjoyed in a single, long weekend. | Photo: Wyandotte Caves website

Wyandotte Caves
Wyandotte Caves have been known for over four thousand years. Commercial tour operations began in 1851. This Historic Cave is distinguished from other Indiana caves by its large passageways and rooms. These rooms have resulted from the process of limestone dissolution and ceiling collapse. There is a 1300-foot section known as the Garden of Helictites which is one of the largest displays of cave formations in the world.
Native Americans used the Historic Cave as a source for flint for tools and other minerals over a period of two thousand years. Wyandotte's flint was traded throughout the region. Early explorers of the cave found the remains of bark torches throughout the cave as well as evidence of mining activities.
Wyandotte Caves are open 9-6 daily Memorial Day to Labor Day. Tours of Siberts Cave are available from March 1st through October 31st, 9-5 daily. Guided tours leave on a regular basis.
For more information visit the Wyandotte Caves website or call 888-702-2837
Marengo Cave
Marengo Cave, is Indiana's most visited show cave. It has been awing visitors with its spectacular beauty for over 120 years. Marengo Cave Park operates a National Landmark Cave and Cave Country Canoes on Blue River and is a full fledged outdoor recreation center for families and groups.
The park is dedicated to providing a safe, fun and educational experience for visitors while preserving, protecting and restoring one of the most beautiful caverns and rivers in the Midwest. Both the cavern and the river it drains into are part of one of nature's most natural and beautiful plumbing systems that will be here long after we are gone. They believe in management and promotion in order to be able to continue to share these natural resources with their visitors and insure the financial resources necessary for their preservation.
Marengo Cave is open 7 days a week. Weekdays 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m, and 9-5:30 on weekends ( eastern daylight savings time)
For more information visit the Marengo Cave Park website or call (888) 702-2837
Cave Country Canoes
Cave Country Canoes is a full service canoe and kayak livery servicing the Blue River. The Blue River is recognized as one of the Midwest's finest canoeing streams. However, as with all small streams, levels fluctuate rapidly. Generally canoeing action is faster paced and a little more exciting in the spring and early summer. Later in the season, the river is often slower.
Cave Country Canoes offers a half-day trip, 2 different full-day trips, and 2 different two-day trips. Early in the season, paddlers can even take a 58-mile trip taking 3 or 4 days. The livery operates daily from May 1st through October 31st on all days where river levels and weather conditions allow.

 | Holiday World Opens this weekend, Splashin' Safari next |
SpringsValley.com News Lexington, KY USA By SpringsValley.com News Staff
Holiday World opens for the season on Saturday, May 3, 2008 with the premiere of Star Spangled Carousel and Reindeer Games.
Star Spangled Carousel, which has been added to the park's 4th of July section, includes a mixture of 30 horses and other animals, plus two chariots.
"Our guests have implored us to add a carousel for years," says Koch. "We think this beautiful ride will make a lot of families very happy."
The second new ride, Reindeer Games, is a smaller version of the popular Liberty Launch drop ride and is located in the park's Christmas section. This three-story "spring ride" will give children of all ages a chance to leap in the air like reindeer.
Other park improvements include additional restrooms, a tram for the Legend Parking Lot, and a number of outdoor clocks in both the Holiday World and Splashin' Safari parks.
Splashin' Safari water park will open next weekend on Saturday, May 10, 2008 with the new Kima Bay family waterplay complex, including seven water slides and an additional Pepsi Oasis.
Kima Bay, in Splashin' Safari, features seven water slides plus more than 100 water-play elements, including more than 125 water jets. The four-story interactive structure is topped by a 1,200-gallon ever-filling, ever-tipping bucket of water. |

Reindeer Games will give children of all ages the chance to fly up and bounce back down, just like Santa's reindeers do!
Kima Bay features seven water slides plus more than 100 water-play elements, including more than 125 water jets. A 1,200-gallon bucket constantly fills with water, tipping periodically to create a four-story waterfall. A variety of playful monkeys also theme Kima Bay. |
"Kima is the Swahili word for monkey," says Koch. "We think children will especially enjoy the fun monkey theming, nearly as much as all the climbing, splashing and sliding in store for them at Kima Bay."
Koch says Kima Bay, Star Spangled Carousel, and Reindeer Games will add a considerable amount of capacity, which is an ongoing priority at the parks.
